The Art of Winning on the Basketball Court

If you want to be part of the winning team on a permanent
basis you need to be able to win both at home and away. A
home side doesn't need to play more than an average game
because the chances are that the away team will play an
inferior game. Why would this be? Research proves that
although the away team may be tired from a long journey,
the reason they lose is because they have a negative
attitude. They go into a game hoping that they might win,
rather than believing it. This is such a defeatist attitude
that they have little fire or passion in their hearts for
the game ahead.
The coach can improve the odds by following the following
steps.
1~Positive thought and a set approach to both home and
away games with clear instructions as to what is required
from all of the players. Prepare the team well for away
games by talking them through all aspects of the game and
also if possible, outline the players that they will come
up against. Maybe video a game there, so that they can see
the court on which they will play and if it involves an
overnight stay, even the hotel that they will be staying
in. This means that the players will feel "at home" in
their new surroundings.
2~When a team plays an away game, preparation is all
important. They will be playing on a strange court,
which the opposition will know all too well. The team may
encounter problems which are out of their control, such as
travel delays, or an unfair referee. Also the crowd will
be made up of supporters from the home team who will try
to undermine them. You must be prepared to ignore the
remarks made and stay calm and focused on the job in hand.
The opposition will be on their guard particularly if they
are faced with a composed team who are in control,
competitive and ready to take on anything in order to
win the game.
3~Instil a 'warrior' attitude in your team. Encourage
them to be proud of their team and everything to do with it
so they hold their head up high whatever the outcome. Such
an attitude will gain the respect of the opposition and
their
supporters and give the players a sense of achievement and
self worth that will help them not only in their game but
also in every aspect of their lives.
