What's the fuss about low-carb diets?

We love all the benefits of living in the twenty first
century but one of the drawbacks is that during our every
day lives we don't use the number of calories that our
grandparents had to consume just to survive. As a result,
the overall trend is that we are all much heavier and this
has given rise to a whole new industry. Fifty years ago it
would have been difficult to find one book on how to diet,
now the book shops have thousands of different ideas
written by gorgeous looking people who you find it
difficult to imagine ever having a weight problem.

Dr Atkins put forward his revolutionary diet plan way back
in the 1970s and the medical world condemned him out of
hand. Previously it was always believed that we needed
carbohydrates in abundance to function properly and here
was someone advocating mostly proteins and fats. With
steadfast resolve, he continued to shout his beliefs and
thirty years later the number of people who find success
with his diet far outweighs most of the other diets on the
market. There is a side industry in low carb snacks that
has started up to help us when we need to eat in a hurry
and stores are having to recognise that there is a change
happening in our eating habits.

An additional problem to our increased weight is the
number of cases of diabetes that are being diagnosed in
people of all ages. It's not part of our general knowledge
that too much sugar in our diets will produce too much
insulin and in addition to this converting our food to fat
it's likely to give us diabetes.

Your body will also store carbs away because it worries
that it may not be fed again and this means that you're
left feeling unsatisfied and all these carbs are simply
going on the hips.

So, what do we do? Most people look at all the advertising
around and decide to go for the 'low fat' alternatives
which look fantastic. Unfortunately they're high in sugar
and increase our insulin levels and therefore our fat.

What you need is a diet that can make a real impact on
your weight. But first you need to really convince yourself
that you want to lose weight. So many people moan about
their bodies but don't have the determination and the will
power to do anything about it. Once you've made a
commitment to lose weight you need to find out what are the
good foods and what are the bad ones. The good ones are
those that will convert to energy rather than fat and
you'll find these are mostly vegetables, eggs, nuts,
cheese, meat and legumes.

You'll need to commit to sticking to the diet, come hell
or high water for at least two weeks. During this period
your carb intake per day cannot exceed twenty grams. It's
very important that you are strict because this is the time
when your body learns to burn fat rather than carbs and if
you play the game at this point you'll find that when you
do start to eat a few carbs again your body won't be
tempted to hoard them.

Once your induction is over you can have the occasional
cheat. This can really help to kick start your body if
you've reached a plateau. The thing you should try to stay
away from at all costs is processed sugar.

Try to consume plenty of fiber to help flush out the waste
in your body regularly. You can do this by drinking
psyllium husk.

Drink lots of water. This will help to flush out some of
the carbohydrates and will also stop you feeling hungry.

When you do need a snack, try to be prepared. Take some
raw veg to work to nibble on or buy some healthy low carb
snacks.
