Bodybuilding as A Lifestyle
by Manny Starkner

Does the word bodybuilding conjure an image of large,
scantily-clad men and women covered with oil and preening
for a mirror or an audience? Does it make you think,
"Strong back; weak mind?"

Quite the contrary, true bodybuilding is a lifestyle for
thinking men and women who wish to attain or maintain
superior physical health and fitness. They achieve this
through careful management of their whole lives, not
just diet and exercise.

For most people, bodybuilding equals being musclebound.
Yes, one of the objectives of bodybuilding is to develop
large, strong muscles. However, pushing and pulling
weights doesn't make for complete physical fitness.
True bodybuilders also concern themselves with the
health of their respiratory and circulatory systems and
the functionality of their muscles in areas other than
lifting weights or running.

Most of us know that what we eat determines our health
and our ability to sustain physical effort. Contrary to
popular belief, though, one doesn't have to consume large
quantities of engineered foods (i.e. meal replacements)
or limit a particular macronutrient (i.e. fat-free or
low-carb). Bodybuilders experiment with the combination
of nutrient and caloric intake that works best for their
bodies, then they adhere to that preferred diet for
improved health and fitness. Occasional indulgences in
junk food are OK in a healthy individual, but the norm
should be a balanced diet based on what your body needs
most to perform optimally.

Our bodies don't grow when we're working out or chowing
down, they develop while we're resting. Do you get
sufficient sleep at night? If not, why not? What needs
to change in your life so that you can do what you
need to do in your daily life, and exercise, and prepare
good foods, and get adequate rest? Before you can manage
your health and fitness, you have to learn how to manage
your time.

Adopting the bodybuilding lifestyle is doable by just
about anyone with the desire and the will to do so.
Approach the bodybuilding lifestyle as an intellectual
undertaking as much as a physical one, and think through
the consequences of the changes you make before you make
them.
