Golf Your Way Around The World
by Belli Roudles
http://www.figagolf.com

If you are planning a golf tour there is no better place to
start than the place where the game was born. Scotland is
believed to be the first nation to play golf in the 1400s.
(Some crazy people may try to convince you that it was the
Dutch who invented it, or others may tell you of paganica -
a game played by the Ancient Romans.)

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club was founded in 1754 and is
still one of the most important rule-makers in the game. It
is in the town of St Andrews, a small Scottish University
Town between Edinburgh and Dundee. The area is packed with
great courses, but take a rainproof jacket.

Without leaving Europe we can improve the weather outlook
by jetting south to Spain where famous El Saler in Valencia
can be found. Nestling by the Med, it is renowned as a hard
course, riddled with sand bunkers.

Another site for your golfing pilgrimage is found in the
north of Europe. In Northern Ireland you will find the
Royal County Down - a course with great views on two sides,
the sea on one and on the other the Mourne mountains.
However, to get a round at the two courses here, Annesley
or Championship you will need to plan in advance.

Taking pretty much straight line south we eventually (it is
a long way) come to South Africa. Here we can try our
skills on the same links that fostered the skills of Gary
Player or Ernie Els.

And one more continent, Africa, ticked off. Next up, Asia.
Japanese golf has been one of the fastest growing sports
anywhere. This is a stunning and interesting country with a
lot of fine courses. In Kobe we find one of the best. The
Hirono course, surrounded by pine forest and steep gorge
drops, was the brainchild of C Alison in 32.

Given that we are already in the continent, it is well
worth visiting New Zealand where, on the North Island, we
find the Paraparaumu Beach links. Tiger came here for the
NZ open in 2002 and the course impressed many in the
international television audience. Book before you arrive!

Back on a plane and heading for another new world
continent, America, lots of options open up for us. The
Carribean has plenty of great courses, as does Mexico. J
Nicklaus is likely to point you towards some of the courses
he designed - how about Cabo del Sol, Los Cabos. On the
coast it tend to catch the wind, so your previous
experience on the similarly windy Paraparaumu Beach will
stand you in good stead.

One more airplane takes us to the United States of America
where we are once again overwhelmed with choice... How
about Palm Springs, Clementon, Augusta???
